Project success thanks to digital construction processes

The construction industry is undergoing profound change, with analogue planning, execution and maintenance processes becoming increasingly digitalised.

The advancement of digitalisation and the increasing demands placed on modern construction projects are making Building Information Modeling (BIM) and Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) increasingly important. Uncoordinated and inefficient construction processes not only result in lost time and cost increases; they also have a negative impact on construction quality. These challenges can be overcome by implementing an integrated planning approach with BIM and IPD, which leads to optimised processes, lower risks and sustainable results, promoting both project success and resource conservation.

Equans Switzerland AG successfully uses BIM and IPD methods to implement construction projects efficiently and purposefully. We use modern tools to optimise processes, reduce risks and ensure the timely and sustainable completion of your construction project.

FAQ

From VDC to BIM and IPD – numerous shortcuts have already become established in the digital construction industry.

In the FAQ section, we explain the most important technical terms as well as answering your questions about digital construction.

What is VDC?

The Virtual Design and Construction (VDC) method uses digital building models and methods to implement projects efficiently and collaboratively – from the planning phase right through to the use phase. The aim is to optimise the building by integrating all stakeholders using BIM, metrics and a continuous improvement process.

What is BIM?

The Building Information Modeling (BIM) method facilitates the digital planning, construction and operation of a building. It uses digital building models to make the entire life cycle of a building more efficient and improve collaboration between the stakeholders.

What is IPD?

Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) is a model that promotes joint responsibility among the key project stakeholders. It aims to avoid conflicts of interest and facilitate collaboration on complex projects by means of a multi-party agreement.

What are the benefits of VDC, BIM and IPD?

Each of these methods has numerous advantages that make construction better and more efficient. When used together, they enable building owners, planners and private individuals to tap into considerable optimisation potential.

  • VDC (Virtual Design and Construction): better planning and visualisation of the construction project, optimised processes, fewer errors and improved collaboration between all stakeholders.
  • BIM (Building Information Modeling): more efficient planning and simulation, reduction of construction errors, cost and time savings and optimised use of the building during operation.
  • IPD (Integrated Project Delivery): promotion of teamwork and shared responsibility, less conflict and better collaboration between all project stakeholders.

Why should I use the BIM method for my project?

Despite new planning and construction techniques, the construction industry has barely improved the productivity of construction processes over the last 30 years. This is due to the fact that a unique entity is created on each construction site, which makes standardisation difficult. That’s where BIM comes in – by improving planning, communication and efficiency thanks to digital models. In contrast to traditional methods, BIM helps to detect errors early, reduce costs and save time, making it possible to reduce the existing weaknesses of the construction industry in a targeted way and noticeably increase efficiency.

What are specific BIM use cases in the planning phase?

The BIM methodology allows us to depict buildings digitally and in 3D as early as the planning phase in order to solve interface problems and lay the foundation for a successful construction process. Examples of the main BIM applications include:

  • Scan2BIM – taking inventories with a 3D scanner to obtain an accurate basis for planning.
  • Collision check – recognition and resolution of conflicts between trades in the digital model.
  • Managing pending issues – distribution of tasks directly in the model or on plans.
  • VR building inspection – virtual inspections to check design and functionality.

What are specific BIM use cases in the execution phase?

In the execution phase, BIM enables project stakeholders to facilitate and optimise the most time-consuming and risky construction processes in a targeted way:

  • Prefabrication – components are manufactured in advance in a workshop, which speeds up installation at the construction site.
  • BIM2Field – a robotic total station enables efficient and model-based marking of points at the site.
  • Project platform (CDE) – tasks, minutes of meetings and checklists are located in digital models and made transparent.
  • Progress checks – monitoring of construction progress using digital documentation and 360° photos.

What are specific BIM use cases in the operation phase?

BIM also plays a key role in the operation phase – preparatory work in the planning and execution phases optimises building management and maintenance.

  • Model-based CAFM – use of the 3D model to manage buildings and assets.
  • Asset management – monitoring and maintenance of important components such as air conditioning systems or lifts in the model.

Digital construction

based on the latest specifications

Builld digitally.

Digital construction processes undergo continuous further development, with institutions such as the Bauen digital Schweiz (BDS) platform, the Swiss Association of Engineers and Architects (SIA), the Swiss Association of Building Technology Engineers (SWKI) and the Swiss Research Centre for Rationalisation in Building and Civil Engineering (CRB) playing an active role. We are very familiar with the publications, specifications and recommendations of these organisations and already apply them in BIM practice.

Take advantage of everything modern BIM and IPD methods have to offer – and implement your construction projects faster, more efficiently and more effectively. We look forward to hearing from you.
